Long Distance Relationships
Ask any single person today if they'd get involved in a long distance relationship, and most would tell you no. Why? Because long distance relationships are hard enough if you've been together awhile. If you don't know someone, it can be nearly impossible and may not be the best idea.
How to Make it Work
Most of the more successful long distance relationships are so because the relationship didn't start out that way. Think of the military. A lot of people in the military were already in relationships before they were deployed overseas. Many were married, in fact. Granted, married people work a little harder to at their long distance relationships because they have that level of commitment. But unmarried couples facing the possible relocation of one person have a decision to make--stay together and try to make a long distance relationship work or break up. For some, breaking up simply isn't an option. They're too much in love. The issue isn't, "Should we stay together or break up?" Instead, it's "Should we get married?" or "Should we both move to be near each other?" It's more a question of how to make it work, not if they should make it work.
There's no doubt that long distance relationships take a lot of work. Thankfully that's a lot easier than it was even 20 or 30 years ago. Now nearly everyone has email or a cell phone. There's even instant messaging and video messaging that some use to stay in touch. There's a lot to be said for a daily phone call, and never underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned love letter.
On the Other Side of the Coin
Some people in long distance relationships have never actually met in person. With so many Internet dating sites, many people opt to get to know one another before meeting in person. Oftentimes these people live far away from each other, which makes an in-person meeting more difficult. But there are a lot of romantic stories of people who met this way and ended up getting married. They still have challenges facing them though. The biggest one is probably deciding which person will move. While some people don't care where they live, for others it can be a tough thing to do.
The bottom line is that most long distance relationships can work if the love and commitment are there. Yes, it takes a little more work, but it can be done. Just have faith in yourself and your partner, and put in the necessary effort required to make the long distance relationship a success.
